Greece is a country located in southeastern Europe. It spreads on the European mainland (southern bulge of the Balkan Peninsula) and on many islands and islets in the Mediterranean Sea. (There are around 3000 islands in the Aegean, Cretan, Thracian and Ionian Sea.

Greece can be easily termed as paradise of islands and islets, which cover approximately one quarter of the territory of Greece. There are more than 3000 islands in Greece, but only a part of them is inhabited permanently. The islands are divided into seven archipelagos-Ionian islands, Saronic islands, Sporades, Aegean islands, Cyclades, Dodecanese islands and Crete.

The most beautiful thing of all these islands is, that each of them has something specific to impress its visitors.

The Blue Flag programme works under the authority of a non-profit, non-governmental organization Foundation for enviromental education (FEE). It was set up in France in 1985, two years later it started to work for all Europe and since 2001 it is spread also over the countries outside of the European continent. The Blue flag is an award given to the beaches and harbours, that fulfill high standards of water quality, safety norms, enviromental protection and ecological education.
