Ixia - island of Rhodes

Ixia

The modern seaside resort of Ixia is located at the northwest coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 5 km southwest of the capital city. Ixia is considered one of the most luxurious resorts on the island of Rhodes.

Tourist resort Ixia

Ixia is situated along the main road leading from the capital city of Rhodes to Diagoras International Airport and further south along the west coast of the island. Ixia is a man-made hotel resort that has been created in response to growing tourist demand and the hotels and associated tourist services in this area are truly modern to the point of luxury. There are several large four to five star hotels here, including the Hilton (Sheraton). The Ixia development is closely linked to the neighbouring seaside resort of Ialyssos.

The resort of Ixia is set in a pleasant setting of trees and other greenery, with tall, luxury hotels and a chain of restaurants and bars along the coast and a quieter residential area further from the shore with the mountain of Akramitis in the background. Local luxury hotel complexes offer both hotel-type facilities and, for example, bungalows with private pools. An abundance of shops, taverns, restaurants, bars and discos are commonplace in this resort.

However, the main road that runs along the west coast of the island and through Ixia can be a bit disturbing. The resort of Ixia actually creates a strip of buildings around this road and in the northern half of the resort the road passes right by the beach, meaning that even if you are staying in a seaside hotel, you have to cross this road to get to the beach (there are some underpasses). In the southern half of the resort, the road passes already more between the individual hotels.

Ixia beach is pebbly to rocky, offering tourists the possibility of renting sunbeds and umbrellas and a variety of sports activities (there are e.g. surfboard and jet ski rentals). Thanks to stronger winds and bigger waves, these adrenaline sports thrive here. A promenade runs parallel to the beach and stretches all the way to Rhodes Town.

Ixia and tips for trips in the vicinity

We definitely recommend taking advantage of the proximity of the historic town of Rhodes with its many beautiful sights and lively social life to get to know it better. Of particular historical importance is the so-called Old Town, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Probably the most famous is the Palace of the Grand Masters, the seat of the highest knight of the Johannite order, built at the end of the 14th century. Visitors to the Old Town, for example, also like to stroll along the Street of the Knights. On the other hand, the New Town is the tourist part of the capital city, with a wide variety of services, shops, bars and hotels. You can get to the capital city by local regular buses, which stop on the main road crossing the resort and are quite reliable.

Another interesting tourist destination that should not be missed when visiting this area is one of the most important archaeological sites on the island, the ancient town of Ialyssos at the end of Filerimos. The archaeological site of Filerimos is located about 8 km inland and hides several beautiful monuments from different historical periods of the island, such as the Monastery of Virgin Mary of Filerimos or the remains of the beautiful Hellenistic temple of Zeus and Pallas Athena.

Who is the centre suitable for?

We would recommend choosing a holiday in Ixia especially to tourists who want to have the facilities of quality and luxury accommodation, but do not have such high demands on the nearby surroundings, which encourage romantic walks or hiking trips. It is really more of a hotel complex development. However, a walk on the beach at sunset is a very romantic moment.

Due to the location of the beach and the sea breeze, which can raise high waves especially in the afternoon, the area is also popular with windsurfing, water skiing, sailing and other water sports enthusiasts.
