Village of Kattavia

The village of Kattavia is located at the crossroads where the roads connecting the eastern and western coasts of Rhodes intersect. It lies in the middle of a fertile plain, surrounded by picturesque hills that change colour with the changing seasons.

Kattavia is a traditional agricultural village with several old houses, some of which have long been abandoned and dilapidated. The village square is nice though, with several tavernas and a mini-market. There are also several nice churches and chapels in Kattavia. Most famous are the 19th century church of Agia Paraskevi, dedicated to the patron of the village and the 10th century church of Panagia Katholiki (Assumption of the Virgin Mary), which stands in the local cemetery.

The village comes most alive on 26th July, the feast of the saint patron of the village, Agia Paraskevi. The whole celebration starts the evening before the feast and ends on the evening of the day after the feast, so this revelry lasts basically three days.

Near neighbourhood of Kattavia

Thanks to the proximity of the surfing beach of Prasonisi (about 10 km to the south), several accommodation facilities have sprung up in the village, because accommodation in the very south of the island is very limited and surfers look for apartments in the nearest resorts. Not far from Kattavia, on the east coast of the island, are two beautiful sandy beaches, Mavros Kavos and Agios Georgios, which are unorganised and very quiet, ideal for a couple.

Kattavia experienced its greatest development during the Italian rule, when the Italians wanted to restore and exploit the potential of this fertile agricultural area. And traces of that time can still be seen here today - many dilapidated Italian dwellings, an old Italian silk factory or the old airport (on your left as you drive towards Prasonisi).

On the contrary, on the right hand side towards Prasonisi is the archaeological site of Vroulia. These are the remains of an ancient coastal settlement (according to many, the predecessor of today's Kattavia), famous for its terracotta ships called "Vroulia vessels".
