The peaceful seaside resort of Kalavarda is located at the northwest coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 30 km southwest of the capital city. The resort and its beach are especially famous among kite-surfers.

Where is Kalavarda

The tourist resort of Kalavarda consists of a small, traditional village and an adjacent sand and shingle beach. It is located at the west coast of Rhodes, close to the resorts of Fanes, Soroni and Salakos.

Kalavarda is a picturesque village with about 500 inhabitants, still mostly agricultural, but with good tourist facilities. The locals are mainly involved in cattle breeding and the cultivation of agricultural products, especially citrus fruits, cereals or oil production and they also practice traditional crafts such as the production of ceramic objects.

But visitors to the village are also catered for, with several taverns and cafes, which are also offering great possibilities to getting know the local life and people better. We also can find several shops and a supermarket here. Kalavarda also offers accommodation options for those interested, either in a small hotel in the middle of the village or in several private apartments.

On the coast lies the spacious, sandy and pebbly Kalavarda Beach, which is especially popular with wind-surfers and kite-surfers, but even ordinary tourists can relax here and swim in the sea.

Kalavarda and its surroundings - tips for trips

The most popular excursion tips around Kalavarda include the site of the ancient city of Kamiros, the Valley of the Butterflies and a hike up to the mountain of Profitis Ilias. Kamiros was one of the three most powerful ancient cities on the island of Rhodes and you can see its discovered remains at the archaeological site located about 4 km south of Kalavarda.

On the other hand, east of the village, towards the interior of the island, the tourist attraction of the Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) is located. From the village of Kalavarda, there is also a trail going to the Profitis Ilias mountain, but there are also other trails or cycle paths through the surrounding countryside. Some visitors even shared photos of local deers they have spotted while walking.
