Myrtos Beach - Crete

Mirtos

The pleasant and well-equipped sand and shingle beach of Myrtos is located in the southeastern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 79 km southeast of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion). Myrtos is one of the most beautiful beaches on the southern coast of Crete.

Myrtos is a relatively long beach, the main and busiest part of which is adjacent to the built-up area of Myrtos. Near the beach you will find several excellent tavernas, snack stalls and shops that make up the local promenade. In particular, we recommend trying the local fish tavernas, which prepare dishes made from fresh sea catch. Right on the beach, visitors can then use the sun loungers with umbrellas and beach showers to enjoy a beautiful, undisturbed holiday day.

The surface of the beach is a mixture of fine sand and small pebbles, which stands out especially for its dark grey colour. It creates an interesting colour contrast with the turquoise and beautifully clear sea. The shoreline slopes gently into the water and the sea is wonderfully calm in this area - unlike most beaches on the south coast of Crete, which are exposed to strong northerly winds (meltemi). This makes Myrtos a popular destination for families with young children and older couples.

Amenities on the beach include centres offering a variety of water sports (including sailing) or a beach volleyball court. There is also a lifeguard to ensure the safety of visitors. It's no wonder that Myrtos Beach has earned the EU Blue Flag award for its cleanliness and tourist facilities, and is one of the most beautiful beaches on the south coast of Crete.

If you walk along Myrtos beach from the resort towards the west, the beach will slowly widen and, more importantly, become quieter and quieter. The western part of the beach is unorganised, with only small tamarisk trees providing pleasant shade. The beach is sometimes used by nudists and the rocky seabed makes it popular with divers and snorkelers.

Similarly, if you head east from the main part of the beach, you will reach a place where the noise of the resort no longer reaches you and where you can relax undisturbed all day (the eastern part of the beach is called "New Myrtos"). On the eastern edge of the resort, at the mouth of the river Kryos, there is a small harbour called Myrtos.
