Ancient Greek city states

Megara

Megara is an ancient Greek city located in the province of Megaris (Megarida), in the region of Attica. It lies about 40 km west of Athens.

Megara was one of the most important Greek city-states in the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Its inhabitants founded a number of colonies, including the cities of Byzantion (now Istanbul), Chalcedon and Megara Hyblaia.

The commercial blockade of Megara by Athens was also one of the main stimuli of the Peloponnesian War. Megara was an ally of Sparta.

Among the most famous natives of Megara were the poet Theognis and the philosopher Euclid.
