Megara Hyblaia

Megara Hyblaia is an ancient Greek city located in Sicily.

The city of Megara Hyblaia was founded around 728 BC by the Dorian inhabitants of Megara in Attica. The inhabitants of the city-state of Megara Hyblaia then founded another city, namely Selínús.

In the history of the city, there were alternating periods of prosperity and decline. In 483 BC the city was destroyed by Gelon of Syracuse, but around 340 BC Timoleon rebuilt it and helped to start its growth again, but in 213 BC. The Romans finally laid waste to the city. The remains of Megara Hyblaia lie about 21 km north of Syracuse.
