Maritsa - Rhodes island

Maritsa

The traditional Greek village of Maritsa is located in the northern part of the interior of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 17 km southwest of the capital city. Maritsa is a small but quite lively village.

The village of Maritsa is situated at the foot of Mount Koumouli, in the interior of the island between the village of Psinthos and the holiday resort of Kremasti. The village probably got its name from an Italian officer named Maritzas, who had control over the village during the Italian rule. Today the village has about 1 800 inhabitants.

The heart of the village is the square with the popular Masasoura Tavern, which prepares all kinds of meze. And although Maritsa is a smaller inland village, it is known for its lively nightlife. The cafes and taverns are crowded even after dark, with young people moving to the bars later in the evening and riding their motorbikes back and forth.

The village of Maritsa is situated in a beautiful setting of the surrounding mountainous and forested landscape, which is also covered by hiking trails (for true hikers, we can offer, for example, the trail to the neighbouring village of Psinthos, which is a roughly 3-hour tour through beautiful terrain). Near the village there are two beautiful churches - the church of Agios Georgios built in the 15th century and the church of Agios Nikolaos with wall paintings from the 15th century. It is only a short and pleasant walk to these.

A local attraction is that not far from the village, at the old international airport (Aerolimenas), car and motorcycle races are held and there are also model airplane shows.
