Tourist centre Kremasti

Kremasti is located in the busier part of Rhodes, close to Diagoras International Airport and on the main road connecting the west coast of the island with the capital city of Rhodes (which is only about 10 km away). Apart from the traffic, however, the resort itself is not very noisy, the beach is quiet and the nights are usually quiet too.

The tourist facilities in the resort are smooth, with plenty of accommodation (smaller hotels, guesthouses and individual apartments for rent), a variety of taverns, cafes and shops. Of course, there are also services such as an ATM, pharmacy and car rental. A few bars stay open late into the night, but for a more lively nightlife you have to go to the neighbouring resort of Ialyssos or Rhodes Town.

Kremasti is a medium-sized tourist resort, with more than 5,000 permanent residents, most of whom now work in tourism. The resort also has a long sand and shingle beach, Kremasti, which is particularly popular with wind-surfers and other adrenaline-pumping water sports enthusiasts.

Culture and sights of Kremasti

The pride of the town is the local church of Panagia Kremasti (Virgin Mary of Kremasti), one of the largest and most beautiful churches on the island of Rhodes. The church is truly magnificent, including its interior, which is decorated with murals and wood carvings. It is set in a green and very well maintained park.

There is a legend that one day a statue of the Virgin Mary was found hanging from an ancient olive tree. The church "Panagia i Kremasti" ("Hanging Virgin Mary") was subsequently built to honour the Virgin Mary and her icon still adorns the interior of the church. The whole village that grew up around the church was then named after it.

The town of Kremasti is famous for the feast of the Virgin Mary ("Panigiri"), which is held here every year on 15th August. The focal point of the feast is a service lasting several hours. The festivities are also accompanied by several days of large town markets with traditional products and delicacies and a funfair for the entertainment of children.

Next to the church is the town library, housed in an impressive building with classical Greek columns. Then, on a hill not far from the town centre are the ruins of a medieval (Venetian) castle, from which there is a magnificent view over the town and its surroundings. Next to the castle is the small church of Agios Nikolaos.

Kremasti and tips for trips in the vicinity

In the vicinity of the resort, we can recommend, for example, a visit to the neighbouring village of Pastida and especially to the local hill of Filerimos, where there is an important archaeological site. The remains of a temple dedicated to Zeus and Athena with the remains of Doric columns and the remains of Byzantine fortifications have been uncovered in the area. On the site of the ancient temple, the church of Virgin Mary of Filerimos was built in the 14th century and has been restored several times since then. The whole site is set in a pleasant environment of mature cypress trees.

About 16 km inland, Petaloudes, the "Valley of the Butterflies", is located in the interior of the island. This is a wooded, sloping ravine with a very unique microclimate that ensures that millions of butterflies of the rare genus Callimorpha quadripunctaria reside here every year from early July to mid-September.
