Kalithies

The picturesque village of Kalithies is located near the northeast coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 13 km south of the capital city.

The traditional village of Kalithies is a typical Rhodian village with narrow cobbled streets and stone houses. In the past, the village was known as Kalathiés or Kalatiés and probably got its name from the "kolythos" (or "kolythea") plants that were abundant in the area. They can still be seen here today, but their abundance is not as impressive as it once was.

There are also several beautiful churches and chapels in Kalithies, which are not to be missed when walking through the village. Particularly famous are the church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour with its iconostasis from the 16th century and the monastery of Virgin Eleousa with two knight coats of arms. The church of the Cross of Honour, surrounded by charming old cafés, is also a popular stop.

For lovers of traditional Greek religious festivals, we recommend visiting Kalithies on 13th and 14th of September, when the feast of the Holy (Honorary) Cross is held.

Near Kalithies is the beautiful stalactite cave of Kalamonias (also known as St George's Cave), which hides beautiful stalactites as well as human footprints dating back to the Neolithic Period (roughly 5,000 to 3,700 BC).

The village of Kalithies is located in the northern part of the island of Rhodes, near its eastern coast. Kalithies lies about 13 km south of the capital city of Rhodes and only 2 km from one of the most popular and sought-after tourist resorts on the island, the resort of Faliraki.
