Pindaros

Pindaros was a Greek writer and author of choral lyrics. He was born in 517 BC (Cynocephalus) and died in 437 BC (Argos).

Pindaros wrote choral lyrics that celebrated Greek aristocrats, but also, for example, the winners of the Olympic Games. His works also contain mythological stories and attempt to set moral values. All of his work was very popular.

Pindar's work was later divided into 17 books, but only 4 "epics" (choral songs celebrating winners in races and gymnastic games) survive. The epics were sometimes very short and were commissioned by customers or high-ranking figures. In addition to the celebration of victory, they contain a mythological narrative. The texts are very serious, thoughtful, and verbally rich, and thus sometimes difficult to understand.
