Greek philosophers

Pantainos

Pantainos was a Greek philosopher and Christian theologian. He was born in the 2nd century AD in Sicily and died in 216 AD in Alexandria. He was a Stoic philosopher before his conversion to the Christian faith.

After Pantainos became a Christian, he embarked on a missionary journey as far away as India. On his return in 180 AD, he became head of the local catechumenal school in Alexandria. Here he taught, for example, Clement of Alexandria.

Nothing of Pantaine's works survives. He was supposed to be the author of the anonymous work "Letter to Diognetus". Mention of him comes from the works of his pupils, especially Clement of Alexandria and Eusebius of Cæsarea.
