Greek philosophers

Metrocles

Metrocles was a Greek philosopher who was born in the 4th century BC in Maroneia in Thrace and died in the 3rd century BC. He lived a cynical lifestyle.

Métrokl's writings have not survived, he is said to have burned them himself. The only source of information on his person is therefore Díogenés Laertios.

In his youth, Métrocles' family moved from Maroneia to Athens. Here Métroklês became a pupil of the philosopher Cratetes of Thebes, and thus began his Cynic way of life. His teacher eventually married his sister Hipparchia.
