Hipparchia of Maroneia

Hipparchia of Maroneia was a Greek Cynic philosopher who was born in 350 BC (in the city of Maroneia in Thrace) and died in 280 BC.

Hipparchia was the sister of the philosopher Metrocles and the wife of the philosopher Cratetes of Thebes.

In her youth, Hipparchia moved with her family to Athens. Here she met Cratetus, who was the most famous Cynic philosopher of his time. She fell in love with him and, despite her parents' disapproval, married him. After their marriage, they lived the Cynic life together on the streets of Athens. At the heart of this life was the motto "everything in public".
