Aristarchus of Samothrace

Aristarchus of Samothrace was a Greek philosopher and grammarian who was born in 220 BC and died in 143 BC.

Aristarchos was the keeper and librarian of the Library of Alexandria from 181-171 BC. He was a pupil of Aristophanes of Byzantium, and his pupils include Apollodorus of Athens and Dionysios Thrax.

He published the works of Homer, which he also commented on. He very often wrote monographs, which he did as one of the first authors. These dealt, for example, with Herodotus and Thucydides.

Aristarchus is considered the founder of literary science.
