Apollonius of Tyana

Apollonius of Tyana was a Greek philosopher who was born in the city of Tyana (now Kemerhisar in Turkey) around 4 AD and was a proponent of neopythagoreanism. He died around 96 AD.

In his lifetime Apollonius travelled extensively and visited Mesopotamia, India and Egypt. He promoted frugal living and was himself a vegetarian. He was to perform many miracles in his lifetime (such as raising a dead woman) and is sometimes thus nicknamed "divine".

All information about him comes from his biography, written by the Roman writer Flavius Philostratos.

After his death, a temple was established for him in Tyana.
