Foundation of Thebes

Zeus fell in love with Europa (daughter of King Agenor) and decided to kidnap her. He therefore transformed himself into a white bull and took Europa to a new continent named after her. King Agenor sent his brother Cadmus to search for Europa... and here begins the story of the founding of Thebes.

The search led Cadmus to the oracle at Delphi. Here he received advice from Pythia: "Do not search for your lost sister and do not return to your homeland. In a lonely meadow you will find a heifer that has not yet borne a yoke. Go after her, and where she rests, build a city and call it Thebes." Cadmus listened to the advice, but after finding the cow, his party was killed by a dragon. Cadmus took revenge and killed the dragon. On Athena's advice, he sowed the dragon's teeth in the ground, which then grew into many warriors who began to fight among themselves. At the end of these battles, five remained, with whom Cadmus subsequently founded Thebes.
