Persephone

In Greek mythology, Persephone is the daughter of the goddess Demeter and the god Zeus.

Zeus promised Persephone to his brother Hades, but said nothing about it to anyone else. One day, it so happened that Hades kidnapped her into the holy of holies. Demeter set out to find her daughter, but for nine days she could find no trace. Until Helios told her what had happened. Demeter therefore asked Zeus to force her brother to bring Persephone back to the world. Zeus eventually promised his help, but only on the condition that Persephone had not seen anything in the underworld. But unfortunately for Persephone. Hades had forced a pomegranate into her mouth, and she could never return to the world.

But Demeter was not going to accept that and sent a crop to earth. People stopped sacrificing to the gods and Zeus had to act. He and Hades agreed that Persephone would be with her mother for two-thirds of the year and with him for one-third. During the time Persephone is in the underworld, the land is suffering, but once she returns to her mother, the land prospers. She returns to her mother in the spring and to Hades in the autumn.
