Resort Mochlos - characteristics and facilities

The small and quiet resort of Mochlos is situated on the shores of Mirabello Bay, about halfway between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia (the village lies about 48 km east of Agios Nikolaos and 35 km west of Sitia). The area around the village is rather desolate and rocky, but the view of the sparkling blue sea and the tiny island of Mochlos is truly magnificent. The main reason why tourists and Greeks alike head here is the famous fish taverns, which follow a long fishing tradition and prepare delicious dishes of freshly caught fish and other seafood.

During the winter months, the village has only about 100 permanent residents, but during the peak tourist season, the small guesthouses and apartments fill up with tourists looking for peace and quiet and a friendly atmosphere. Mochlos is a truly remote village, and there are no buses - the nearest bus stop is in the neighbouring village of Sfaka, and there are two taxi drivers in Mochlos who provide connections to the surrounding area.

Mochlos beach and Mochlos island

Mochlos is situated on a rocky promontory of the mainland and the coastline around the resort is mainly rocky and stony. The only manicured beach is the small sandy and rocky beach of Mochlos with azure clear waters and a gradual entrance to the sea. However, there are plenty of small nooks and rocky patches near the village where you can also swim well and still enjoy more privacy. Thanks to the rocky bedrock and clear water, the place is also popular with sports divers.

Within sight of the beach is the tiny island of Mochlos in the sea, which can also be reached by swimming (it is located about 150 metres from the mainland), and in good weather, small boats also bring visitors here. In the times of the Minoan civilisation, Mochlos was an important port and the island was probably connected to the mainland in the past, as evidenced by the ruins of Roman buildings found under the sea (the sea depth is no more than 2.5 m at the junction of the islet and the mainland). Currently, there is a small archaeological site on the island.

For whom the centre is suitable

The resort is suitable for tourists who want to relax, enjoy the true Greek tranquility and enjoy delicious seafood specialties on their seaside holiday. Due to the poorer transport accessibility, we do not recommend it for those visitors who wish to travel or enjoy the lively nightlife.
