Kavros - characteristics of the resort

The village of Kavros is also known as Paralia Kourna or Kournas. It is located on the northern coast of Crete, on the border of the two prefectures of Chania and Rethymno, and falls under the regional town of Chania (about 45 km away).

The small Cretan village of Kavros has only about 170 permanent inhabitants and lives mainly from tourism. There are mostly small hotels and family-run guesthouses, a few tasty tavernas and small shops. Otherwise, the resort is very peaceful.

Kavros beach and sand dunes

The eponymous Kavros beach actually ends a long sandy beach stretching along the coast of Almiros Bay. It begins at Georgioupolis Beach in the western part of the island and is about 10 km long in total. Thanks to the gradual entry into the sea and the beautifully clear water, the beaches here are very popular and are also popular with families with children. A large number of the beaches have also been awarded the EU Blue Flag for their cleanliness and facilities. However, visitors must beware of strong northerly winds, which bring with them big waves and treacherous sea currents.

The beaches around Kavros are partly organised, with sunbeds and parasols, beach bars and sports centres offering adrenaline-pumping water activities. The fact that Kavros beach is already marginal has at least partially preserved the very rare ecosystem of sand dunes, which are home to unique plants and some animals. The most important role of the sand dunes is to protect the hinterland from destructive erosion and even small ponds are formed in winter.

Who is the centre suitable for?

Kavros is a really small and quiet seaside resort, which will be best suited to those who are looking for peace, relaxation and a bit of an escape from the big crowds. However, if local visitors are looking for a bit of excitement and entertainment or a visit to one of Crete's unique sights, this is no problem thanks to good transport links. The North Cretan motorway passes close to the resort.
