Georgioupolis - Crete

Georgioupoli

The peaceful and well-equipped seaside resort of Georgioupolis is located in the north-western part of the Greek island of Crete, surrounded by beautiful nature. It lies about 103 km west of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion), in the prefecture of Chania.

Georgioupolis - characteristics of the resort

The small coastal town of Georgioupolis (or Georgioupoli) is situated in the idyllic countryside around the bay of Almiros, some 37 km east of the regional city of Chania.

The unique atmosphere of this place is given by the Almiros River, which flows through the town and enters the Cretan Sea. The Almiros River flows out of Lake Kournas, the only freshwater lake on the island of Crete. However, until the end of the 19th century, the area was very marshy and even avoided by tourists for fear of malaria. However, thanks to the gradual planting of trees and shrubs, the area around the river has been drained and today you can walk around in a pleasant and fresh environment full of all kinds of greenery.

The town of Georgioupolis has good facilities in the form of a large number of accommodations, nice Greek taverns and restaurants, various shops and services of all kinds (ATM, car rental, pharmacy, etc.). There are smaller hotels and family apartments in the resort, but to the east of the resort there is one large hotel complex, the Pilot Beach Resort, set in a huge garden with swimming pools and sports areas.

Visitors to the town especially admire its beautiful seafront and pleasant square with taverns and shops. There are also two small churches in Georgioupolis. One in particular, the church of Agios Nikolaos, is often photographed because it stands at the end of a long pier, at the mouth of a local river, and is otherwise surrounded by the sea on all sides.

Beaches around Georgioupolis

The coastline around Georgioupolis is covered with beautifully fine sand, which, together with the gradual entry into the sea and the azure sea, attracts families with small children. The beaches here are quite spacious and the largest beach of Georgioupolis is also guarded by a lifeguard. However, during strong northerly winds (called meltemi) the sea can be very rough and dangerous - we recommend that you watch the flags and follow the instructions of the lifeguards.

The main beach of the resort, Georgioupolis Beach, is about 2 km long and very well organised. The sandy coastline then stretches further east for a total of about 10 km, ending at the small Kavros Beach. On the other hand, to the north of the resort, across the Almiros River, lies the beautiful sandy Kalyvaki Beach, which is usually quieter and less affected by strong winds.

Who is the centre suitable for?

The town of Georgioupolis is a rather quiet, family-oriented tourist resort, but it is also very accessible by road, as it is close to the Cretan national road that runs along the northern coast of the island. It is also sought after for its beautiful sandy beaches, which can be battered by larger waves during strong northerly winds.

We would therefore recommend Georgioupolis more for those who want to relax on their holiday and enjoy the tranquillity, tasty Greek tavernas and nice beaches. The town can also be used as a good starting point for travelling around the western half of Crete.
