Resort Amoudara - characteristics and facilities

The holiday resort of Amoudara (also spelled Ammuodara or Amudara) is located in close proximity to the capital city of Heraklion and forms a de facto suburb of it, as the two cities have been connected by the ongoing development. The resort is situated along the northern coast of the island, bordering Heraklion on the eastern side, and its growth has been halted by the local mountains to the west. A long and beautiful beach stretches the entire length of the coastline and is one of the area's biggest attractions.

The resort of Amoudara is fully equipped for tourism and visitors can enjoy the local amenities in the form of a large number of accommodation facilities (from small apartments to large luxury hotels), excellent tavernas and restaurants, cosy cafes and shops with a variety of goods. Nightlife is provided by bars and discos in the centre of the resort. But if you're a real nightlife enthusiast, head to the neighbouring capital Heraklion or, better still, the resorts of Hersonissos and Malia (east along the north coast), which really never sleep.

Amoudara beach

The tourist resort is bordered by the beautiful sandy beach of Amoudara, which is famous for being one of the longest beaches on the island. It is especially popular for its cleanliness and facilities, for which it has been awarded the Blue Flag. Apart from tourists relaxing on sun loungers or frolicking with their children in the sea, you'll also see plenty of surfers (windsurfing and kitesurfing are popular).

Excursions and sights nearby

One of the most beautiful monasteries in Crete is considered to be the nearby monastery of Savathianon (northwest of the resort), in the grounds of which there is a cave with a built-in church of Aghios Antonio. On the way, you can visit the village of Rodgia with its magnificent views over the bay and the town of Heraklion. In the tourist maps you will also find marked the village of Tylissos with a small archaeological site (about 13 km inland), where the remains of three dwellings from the Minoan culture have been uncovered. However, the site is not visible from the main road and is also poorly marked, so you may have to search for a while.

Thanks to its strategic location, the resort is a good starting point for exploring the beauty of the whole island of Crete, as from here you can head west, east and south of the island. Be sure to visit the neighbouring capital Heraklion, with its remains of Venetian walls, beautiful harbour and other historical sites.

For whom the centre is suitable

The resort of Amoudara is ideal for lovers of sun and water sports, and its offer will keep you entertained for a long time. Thanks to the quality tourist service, you can enjoy your holiday and just relax.

The only distraction in the area may be the electric power plant that rises at the western end of Heraklion Bay. However, it is not perceived as a nuisance by most locals or tourists, as evidenced by the fact that Amoudara continues to be one of the most popular resorts in northern Crete.
