Voulisma beach, also known as Golden beach, is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Crete. It forms part of the picturesque seaside resort of Istro, which lies on the rugged coastline of Mirabello Bay, about 13 km southeast of the popular and modern port town of Agios Nikolaos. The three local beaches of Karavostasi, Agios Panteleimonas and Golden Beach are particularly popular with visitors to Istro. All three beaches are within walking distance of the resort centre.

The largest and most popular of these beaches is Voulisma Beach, covered with wonderfully soft and light sand, which together with the azure blue waters of the sea creates an interesting colour contrast. The shoreline slopes gently into the sea and you will see many families with small children playing in the shallow waters. The beach is organised and well equipped for tourists, with sun loungers, umbrellas, beach showers and a refreshment stand available for visitors. There is even a lifeguard to ensure the safety of tourists.

Voulisma beach is long but quite narrow and can therefore look very crowded during the peak tourist season. However, the coastline around the resort is full of small coves and rough waters, so in addition to the three beaches mentioned above, there are several small, often well-hidden beaches that offer more peace and privacy. One more annoyance you may encounter here is the occasional litter brought in by the sea currents. In this case, we recommend going to the beaches in the western part of the resort, which are better protected from the winds and waves.
