Lygaria Beach - Crete

Ligaria

The popular sandy beach of Lygaria is located in the northern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 23 km northwest of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion).

The beach forms part of the peaceful holiday resort of the same name, Lygaria, which lies on the shores of a picturesque bay in the northern part of Crete. The bay protects the beach and most of the resort from strong northerly winds (called meltemi winds), while its rocky walls create ideal conditions for abundant underwater life.

The surface of the beach is covered with fine golden sand, sometimes with pebbles. The coastline descends very gently into the water at first, making the beach very popular with tourists and families with smaller children. The sea is sparkling clean and in the summer months it is even nicely heated.

Lygaria is an organized beach, equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas, including the facilities of several nearby tavernas serving delicious Greek and international food. The beach is also considered an entertainment centre, as there is a wide range of adrenaline-pumping water sports on offer, including diving and sailing. There is also a diving school.

The coastline in this area is very rugged, made up of many large and small bays. To the west of Lygaria, just over the hill (about 1 km), is another beautiful sandy beach, Agia Pelagia. These beaches are very similar in type. If you head east (or rather south - about 10 km), you will reach Palaiokastro beach.
