Ancient Greek city states

Nesebar

Nessebar, Nesebur

Nessebar is an ancient Greek city located on the Black Sea coast, in the territory of present-day Bulgaria. The town is also known as the "Pearl of the Black Sea".

Originally the city was called Manebria (derived from King Menas) and later Mesembria. The name Nesebar has been used since 1934.

The original town of Manebria was founded by the Greeks in the 5th century BC on an island, which was later connected to the mainland by a 300 m long neck. Historically, it is probably the oldest inhabited town in Bulgaria.

In the city we can find a number of Thracian monuments, including about 40 churches and parts of the city fortifications. Since 1983 the city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
