Ancient Greek city states

Kroton

Croton is an ancient Greek city that was founded in 710 BC as an Achaean colony.

The original name of Kroton has changed throughout history. In the period from the Middle Ages until 1928 the town was known as Cotrone. Today the town is called Crotone and is an Italian town in the Calabria region.

The town's most famous figure was the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who fled his native island of Samos around 530 BC and founded a philosophical school here. The reason for his flight was that the tyrant Polycrates had seized control of Samos.

Another famous figure from this city is Alcmaeon of Croton (Greek ancient physician and philosopher).
