Ancient Greek city states

Epidaurus

Epidaurus was an ancient Greek city, the remains of which can be found in the region of Argolida on the Peloponnese peninsula.

The city of Epidaurus was an important cultural and religious centre in its time, and the cult of the god Asclepius was particularly strong here.

The most important building is the Sanctuary of Asclepius, which is said to have contained up to 160 bedrooms and healing springs. The Temple of Asclepius was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988. It also used to house an amphitheatre that could accommodate up to 14,000 people. There was also the so-called tholos, a marble structure where the sacred snakes that Asclepius had in his emblem were kept.
