Ancient Greek city states

Ephesus

Ephesus was a Greek city in Asia Minor, located in Lydia on the Aegean coast.

The site was known as early as the 2nd millennium BC. The city of Ephesus was then under the influence of the Hittite and Mycenaean cultures. In the 10th century BC, the Ionian Greeks settled here.

The city of Ephesus was adjacent to one of the Seven Wonders of the World - the Temple of Artemisia (Artemision). The temple was later restored and enlarged by the Thracian king Lysimachus. Other important buildings were also built in the city, such as the theatre, which held up to 24,000 spectators and was the largest in the world. There was also an important library and baths.
